We don't know when coffee was first carried the short distance from Africa to the southern and verdant strip of the Arabian peninsula we call Yemen, but the Arab world held a monopoly on coffee production for hundreds of year. When coffee slipped their grasp, it continued first to India, but it did not leap onto the world stage as a commodity outside of Arabia until the Dutch brought coffee to Java around 1700. So Europeans were not growing coffee until long after they had been consuming coffee. Coffee from Java would become as famous as coffee from Mocha, but neither was as famous as the two combined as a blend.
